History

Mar Thoma Syrian Ebenezer Church Thrissur

Thrissur Mar Thoma Congregation completed hundred years of fruitful existence in November 2004. It is a great occasion to commemorate Gods abundant blessings during all these years. The Gospel that touched the hearts of a few humble believers transformed them as ambassadors of Christ in the cultural capital of Kerala. They started a prayer fellowship in Thrissur and opted to be a part of the Mar Thoma Church. Initially a room was rented out at Erinjeri Angadi for the Prayer Fellowship and later a land was purchased in the same area, which subsequently facilitated establishment of the Girl’s School. This High School for Girl’s was a boon to thousands of poor students for education in those days and even now. Subsequently, the present Church site was purchased at East Fort, Thrissur, and a Church building was constructed.

Sunday, the 13th of August 1961 is a memorable day for the Marthomites of Thrissur. The Congregation dispersed after the morning worship, and in the afternoon the children gathered with their teachers for the Sunday School. The western end the Church building creaked and crumbled, leaving just sufficient time to evacuate everyone. The members who witnessed this incident would recollect it as Gods providence that no one was killed or hurt. Halleluiah. Glory to God for His wonderful care for His children.

After the collapse of the Church building, the congregation used the Marthoma Girl’s High School for worship. Within eight months, a new spacious Church building was constructed and consecrated by Most Rev. Juhanon Marthoma Metropolitan on 19th May 1962. We gratefully acknowledge the wondrous mercy, grace and abundant blessings of God and bow before him in adoration.
